The number of road accidents in Belgium fell for the first time in 2 years. In Flanders and Brussels, the number of road accidents fell by 9.5 per cent and 2.2 per cent respectively. In Wallonia, the number of road accidents did rise by 1.1 per cent. In doing so, the number of annual traffic deaths also fell from 540 people to 501 people, of which 212 were motorists, 101 pedestrians and 77 cyclists. There are fewer and fewer toll gates on French motorways. France is replacing Péage toll gates in an automatic number plate registration system. You will now have to pay your péage in advance online, at a vending machine or in a shop. You can also pay 72 hours after your trip, in case you forgot to pay. The electrification of company cars in Belgium is ahead of the electrification of private cars. At European level, we get a different picture: in the private market, a total of 15.6 per cent are electrified, while 14.1 per cent of company cars are electrified. Belgium has an overall increase of 44.8 per cent registrations in electric cars, most of which are therefore company cars. Read the whole report here.
May was the heaviest congestion month in Flanders since measurements by the Traffic Centre started in 2010. There was an average of 1,173 kilometres of traffic jams for 1 hour per working day. The cost of Brussels Airlines' European flights will become up to €36 more expensive from 2025. This is because Brussels Airlines is partly charging the extra cost of a new environmental law. How much the increase is depends on distance and class of travel. More information can be found here.
Young people aged between 18 and 24 can buy a Youth Holidays Combi season ticket during the summer holidays. In this way, young people can use SNCB, De Lijn, STIB and TEC unlimitedly for 59 euros a month. The season ticket is available on the SNCB website.
Some commuting allowances increase from 1 July 2024. The mandatory bicycle allowance for PC200 has increased to €0.27 per kilometre. The general allowance for professional travel by private car has also increased. Depending on the PC, either the quarterly or annual adjustment is followed:
- Quarterly adjustment: 0.4927 euro/km
- Annual adjustment: 0.4415 euro/km
